Virgil was the son of Rufus Alonzo "Lon" Mahan and Mary Eliza Kitchen Mahan. Virgil's first wife was Bessie Mae Lamb, married 1928, and his second wife was Mary A. Hardee, married 1969. Virgil was sur vived by his wife and his children with Bessie.

Virgil wrote "THE HISTORY OF LEESVILLE" for his Thesis as partial requirement for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, San Marcos, Texas. He worked in Gonzales Cou nty, Texas, as Transportation Director of Public Schools. He lived the last part of his life in Waco, Texas, where he died.

Virgil's "History of Leesville" will continue to reward researchers of genealogy, especially those with ties to Leesville, Texas.
