Note | HERRON-SPINKS CEMETERY Located West of Crockett off Hwy 7, 5.2 miles from loop. Turn Right atDicksonHopewell sign, go past church, pass over creek bridge and cemetery ison the left. Located on John Spinks property, and was fenced when John acquired theproperty more than forty years ago. Only one marker remains, with evidenceof some thirty or more graves at one time. Any interested persons should contact John or Georgia Spinks beforeattempting to find the graves, there being no other access except throughJohn's locked gate. In the abstract of title to the property, the name Herron is spelled five toseven ways: Hearon, Heron, Hearron, for example. Mr. Herron came to Texas from Alabama, and the homestead was located nearthe burial grounds. We remember parts of an old picket fence in the cemeteryin 1938 which appeared to be a small enclosure abou t the grave of a child. Miss Wyncie Barnhill, a teacher at Porter Springs, recalls attending thefuneral of Andrew Herron, believed to be the last burial here. We are indebted to Roland Murray, Elizabeth Ellis, Georgia Jolley, andpossibly others for this information. The graves we have traced are as follows: HEARON David R.; b:9-13-1807; d: 10-6-1872 HEARRON (HERRON) Andrew; elderly manfound by Murray neighbors, no dates.; Last burial here. His place waslocated at the back of John Spinks property, known as the McCarty or Bet Vaughn place. DICKSON Frances, buried in1930s; Mother of Rev. Ed Jolley W W (Winston); nodates; husband of Lizzie SIMMONS boy, no information,a white person Submitted by Georgia Spinks |
